How to Make an Obby in Roblox Studio (With AI Doing the Building)

Updated October 2026 · 5 min read

An obby is the easiest first Roblox game to build: simple rules and easy to test. Here's how to build the basics with AI doing the heavy lifting.

You'll need Roblox Studio with an AI connected. Assistant works for small steps; for the whole build, connect an agent like Claude Code (setup guide).

Step 1: Checkpoints and saved progress

Checkpoints are what make an obby feel fair. Build them first:

Make a checkpoint system: one checkpoint part at the end of each stage. Touching it sets the player's Stage in leaderstats if it's higher, and they respawn at their last checkpoint. Save Stage with DataStoreService on the server so progress survives rejoining. Then playtest and check the output for errors.

Step 2: Kill bricks

Make a reusable kill brick: any part tagged "KillBrick" with CollectionService kills the player on touch. Make them bright red neon so they're obvious. Add 3 to stage 2 as a test, then playtest.

Using tags means one script handles every kill brick in the game instead of a copy in each part.

Step 3: Moving and disappearing platforms

Add two obstacle types using tags: "MovingPlatform" moves back and forth smoothly between two points, and "FadingPlatform" fades out and stops being solid a second after you step on it, then comes back. Players standing on moving platforms should move with them. Playtest.

Step 4: Build stages in batches

Ask for 10 stages at a time, not 30 at once, and have the AI check every checkpoint is reachable at default walk speed and jump power. Then play it yourself. AI can check that things work; only you can tell if it's fun.

Working is not the same as popular

There are thousands of obbies on Roblox. A working one gets zero players. What makes one get clicked, keep players and earn is the theme, the hook and the launch, and that's what the Larpings course teaches. See Larpings.
